How a Lasting Power of Attorney can offer peace of mind for you and your family
Many families are tight-knit; they care for one another and responsibilities are taken seriously. However, being married or being a son or daughter gives you no authority when your spouse or parent becomes significantly ill or loses capacity.
Often relatives want to help out but find they are unable to do so because banks, building societies and utility companies will only communicate with the person in whose name the account is.
A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to nominate a close relative or friend to deal with your finances and pay your bills if your circumstances change and you cannot manage on your own.
Think of it as a one-off insurance policy, putting those you love and trust in the driving seat should the worst happen, for example through a stroke, dementia, a critical illness or accident, or simply have sight or hearing difficulties.
Many people put off making a Lasting Power of Attorney thinking it will never happen to them. It is true that you might never need one. However, if your circumstances change then a registered Lasting Power of Attorney lets those you trust get to work from day one of your illness with full authority to act for you.
