Modern Methods of Construction: Modular Homes
Following the Business Secretary's recent visit to Leeds, the government is championing a drive to make the North of England the world leader in modular homes. But what are modular homes and how will they affect home buyers?
Similar to the post war ‘prefab’ homes constructed in the 1940s, a modular home is a property manufactured in a factory away from the construction site. The individual components are then transported to site where they are assembled. Unlike the post war ‘prefabs’, modern modular homes are built to last and many come with the same new build warranty you would expect from any newly built home.
Using modern methods of construction to manufacture homes in a factory will allow builders to shorten build times and reduce their carbon footprint. Modular homes are likely to have less defects than a new home built using conventional techniques.
As when buying any property you should seek the advice of a surveyor as to the long term value and marketability of any new home.
